Repetitive Strain Injury Among Manual Wheelchair Users
نویسنده
چکیده
W heelchairs provide mobility for millions of people with physical impairments. However, prolonged manual wheelchair use can lead to pain and repetitive strain injury (RSI) of the upper extremities. The number of manual wheelchair users experiencing pain tends to increase with the time spent using a wheelchair. Although manual wheelchairs have improved tremendously over the past 15 years, many people continue to develop arm pain and injury due to cumulative trauma. What causes this problem may not be the wheelchair. RSI may be caused by transfers or other activities of daily living. Yet, most clinicians and researchers agree that the wheelchair itself contributes substantially to the development of RSI. We present an overview of the current perspective on repetitive strain injury among manual wheelchair users.

Development of an OpenSim shoulder model for manual wheelchair users with tetraplegia
INTRODUCTION Extended manual wheelchair use has been associated with repetitive strain injuries in the shoulder and has been identified as a contributing factor to upper limb pain experienced by manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injury (SCI) [1]. Due to the nature of their SCI, individuals with tetraplegia (formerly quadriplegia) may be at an even greater risk for developing shoulder inj...

The new developments in wheelchairs affecting people with spinal cord injuries never cease to amaze me . After over 17 years of trying to develop better wheelchairs and making the assessment and procurement process more consumer responsive, we seem to continue to be faced with a constant flow of new issues. I do not mean to imply that there has been no progress. Tremendous advances have been ma...

Objectives: Extensive use of wheelchair increases caregiver dependency, risk of bedsores, risk of injury during transfer, and so on, and it effectively decreases quality of life, safety, and comfort of the people with disability. Therefore, improving the design of wheelchairs is highly essential in promoting the quality of life and level of participation among people with disability. The design...

Degenerative changes of the shoulder are a common complication in patients after spinal cord injury. The main cause is chronic overload to the shoulder joint due to manual wheelchair propulsion and transfers. Reduced shoulder function has a significant impact on all aspects of daily life. Shoulder arthroplasty in this group of patients is a challenging procedure because of the unique demand on ...
متن کاملCompensatory strategies during manual wheelchair propulsion in response to weakness in individual muscle groups: A simulation study.
BACKGROUND The considerable physical demand placed on the upper extremity during manual wheelchair propulsion is distributed among individual muscles. The strategy used to distribute the workload is likely influenced by the relative force-generating capacities of individual muscles, and some strategies may be associated with a higher injury risk than others. The objective of this study was to u...
